The flag of Catalonia was erased from the original shield of Puerto Rico

The researcher from the Institut Nova Història (INH), Leandre Martí, provides us with another evidence of the reworking of the past by the colonial censorship, this time focused on the adulteration of the original coat of arms of Puerto Rico. The coat of arms of Puerto Rico is the second oldest in the New World. It was granted in 1511 by the King of Catalonia-Aragon, Ferran II (Ferdinand II), who was then King of Catalonia and all his kingdoms and regent of Castile, on behalf of his daughter, Queen Joanna, who was incapacitated. The original coat of arms featured the flag of the Kingdom of Catalonia, alongside that of the Kingdom of Sicily. However, it was not until much later, on March 9, 1905, that a law regulating the coat of arms of Puerto Rico was approved.
